Infrared laser light is focused to the point where the intensity initiates self-focusing and a white-light filament results. The shape of the optical filaments is measured by a charge-coupled device camera. A voltmeter connected to a simple DC circuit measures the conducting plasma column when the column completes the circuit between the electrodes. (Adapted from ref. 4.)
